Matthew, i have been a practising pagan now 4 over 30 years.i am also a white witch.i do practise the art of magic, but the word magick is not used.
“I don’t think that witchcraft is just the practice of magick”
Well… it kind of is. There’s not a whole lot more to it then folk magick, ceremonial magick or various superstitions.
Yes, it is a craft and it can be a way of life. I think your use of the word “just” minimises how much “magick” really encompasses.
It is hard to find books on “just witchcraft” because usually witchcraft comes with a whole bunch of religious packaging or it’s not actually called “witchcraft”… Hoodoo, Stregheria, Brujeria, hedgewitchery etc are all forms of witchcraft. Try Christopher Penzak’s “Temple of Witchcraft” series, Ann Moura’s “Green Witchcraft” series or Scott Cunninghams folk magick stuff for starters, or try the podcast “A Witches Primer”… you might find things in there that work for you, but really, it’s just helpful to know about Wicca and various pagan religions so that you can differentiate in your resources what comes from the religious side and what doesn’t.

Wicca is a religion.
Witchcraft is a particular type of magical practice. Some people blend their religious beliefs with their witchcraft beliefs, but witchcraft is still magical practice.
Witchcraft is also highly eclectic. If you’re looking to study, you’ll want to start looking at books about magic in general. Unfortunately, a lot of “witchcraft” books are, IMHO, commercialized drek. They don’t talk about magical theory but instead give recipe after recipe for “spells” promising you the ability to magically control your life, which is just absurd. You don’t get more out of something than you put in. You can’t expect chanting someone else’s words will rdically altar the universe.
It’s not just the practice of magick because there are many different types of magick (chaos magick, ceremonial magic). Witchcraft is following the old tradition of the magick witches practice. In Wicca it isn’t required that you perform magick because it’s all about the relationship you have with your deity. There are many religions that practice witchcraft and other types of magick. You can basically be apart of any religion or walk of life and practice Witchcraft, because it is just that, a craft or practice.
I’m not a Wiccan btw.
Wicca and Witchcraft are thought to be the exact same things, but in reality, it isn’t. Wicca is a polytheistic faith that reveres Nature and worship a Goddess and/or a God, and we believe that the Divine manifest in both the natural world and the Universe. The only reason as to why people think the two things are synonymous is that the majority of Wiccans out there practice Witchcraft. There are some Wiccans who do not practice Witchcraft, however, they focus on the spiritual aspect of the faith and pray.
Witchcraft, however, is a practice that is compatible with some faiths. The practice of Witchcraft is a learned skill rather than a religion. It is often mistaken for a religion because some Wiccans who practice Witchcraft call themselves Witches. Me, for example, I call myself both Wiccan and a Witch, because both things incorporate with me.
Some really good books I have read on Wicca and Witchcraft include:
-Wicca: The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham
-Green Witchcraft by Ann Moura
-Wicca: Ancient Feminine Magic (as a bonus, there is a pentacle necklace in there!)
There are lots of good books out there. Barnes and Noble is where I go, and I think they have a great selection of the stuff. Go with your own judgement and decide what is good. Blessed be!
Wicca is a religion. It focuses on the reverence and honor of a God and Goddess manifested in the form of many pre-existing deities. Witchcraft has little to nothing to do with Wicca. Many authors (to make a buck) like to misinform that Wicca and Witchcraft is synonymous. Wicca and Witchcraft are separate things. They CAN, however, be practiced together to create a complimentary practice; each bringing something to the other.
Witchcraft IS more than just magic (and it’s spelled magic…the K is merely a fad used by those to make them look like they know what they’re talking about). Magic is merely a tool utilized in Witchcraft…perhaps one of the main and mostly used. Within Witchcraft there are numerous tools used, most of which are not physical items. Thought, intentions, feelings, concentration, focus are all tools used within the self to achieve goals. Outwardly, the use of physical tools can help those inward tools to work better, but the physical tools are not necessary (at least to the more seasoned and experienced Witch).
Witchcraft is a craft that allows the practitioner to have full control of their choices, and how certain circumstances manifest. The manipulation of surrounding energies (utilizing the mental tools listed above) allows for changes to be made in the physical world. It doesn’t mean that the results will be instantaneous, the changes can take anywhere from a few days to even a few years to manifest. The practice is very subtle, and one who is observant enough will notice any change made. The craft requires the practitioner to develop patience, and we could all use a little more patience in this world. It’s also great for developing self and mental discipline, and meditation techniques used within can help relieve stress and make one more healthier.
Blessed Be, First get a entomological dictionary. The word witch comes from wica. a wice was a femal, wiccan a male. To separate the two wica and witch is just not the truth. They are real words with history. The fact we forgot and started to call other magical shamanic practices years ago . Witchcraft does not make it so. The wica’s craft of magic became witchcraft. There are many form of magic. And many forms of wica. used today. With two c’s. to mean both gender. G.B.G wrote wica.and brought it forward as a magical mystery religion. Crowley call magic ” the art of causing change in conformity with ones will. To change oneself to live in conformity with your will. your true self. The GREAT work Or a witch might know it as “Ones Highest Ideals”, this is wica an is magic and religion. Do you were that word religion came from. The best book is that dictionary I have already suggested . religion is Latin.meaning to reconnect. Your question huge. As one studies deeper you will find that in truth the two words mean the same thing. As fare as books go they will fill the time and give you something to practice tell you look and get involved with a coven/tradition. To know, you need be a witch/wiccan. Tell then it’s opinion
Wicca is a religion, The “Old Religion”..based on the worship of nature. You might want to check out the books of Raymond Buckland and Scott Cunningham first. Wicca is NOT just about magick or casting spells. If that is what you want you would do well to just study ceremonial magick. If you are interested in learning about Wicca….try to get your hands on some of Scott Cunningham’s books first and get Buckland’s Complete Book of Witchcraft.
