Wicca is as make-believe as Dungeons & Dragons. The purpose of the potions is nothing more than role playing. Don’t worry, being as it is all make-believe – it’s harmless.

Wicca is a religion, not a culture, and potions aren’t really part of it.

Sure, many Wiccans practice Witchcraft, and some might make potions, but it’s not really part of the Wiccan faith. You don’t even have to be Wiccan to use potions.

Potions are not really that mysterious; you make an infusion of tea to heal a sore throat and ask for blessings on it. You make yourself a lavendar and thyme oil blend and pour it in the tub to help you relax at the end of the day. You make an aphrodisiac wine to share with your lover on Valentine’s day for a fun evening.

If you believe herbs have energy, you might mix a potion just to keep in a bottle to dab some on yourself when you need that energy (health, courage) or when you need something to draw it to you (money, love) or to repel something you don’t want and protect you (negativity, illness).

You pour your energy into them and try to raise energy from the natural items you are using in hopes of it giving your goals a little boost in the universe. Largely, though, they work on a psychological level (aromatherapy, color, scent, etc., has an effect on the brain).

Some people practice magic timing it with moon phases because they believe the moon, sun, stars or planets have different energies and influences, so they can help (or hinder) your spell. A new moon might be chosen if you are starting a new endeavor, while a waning (shrinking) moon might be chosen if you are trying to banish something.

How potions were made in the past differ would depend on the culture. I mean there is definitely going to be a difference between a 16th century Christian practicing some minor folk magic that got passed down in the family to an ancient Egyptian 4000 years ago performing ritual magic. But I think the essential purpose remains the same.
